School Bus / Transportation Services
The school bus is an important and reliable solution for many families for the daily journey to school.
Eligibility for transport:
In general, the following distances apply:
Children in grades 1 to 4 (P1-P4) with a school route of more than 2 km (one way)
(shortest walking route, measured via Google Maps or the Bavarian Spatial Information System – RISBy)
Kindergarten (KG1 and KG2):
There is no regular entitlement to transport for KG1 and KG2.
Transport may be possible if:
-
-
- a sibling is already being transported, and
- a seat is available
-
Please submit applications at the same time.
Please note: Kindergarten children may have to give up their seat during the school year to eligible students (P1–P4) if needed. There is no guaranteed entitlement.
P5 students:
There is no entitlement to transport for P5 students.
- Transport is only possible in exceptional cases
- Only together with siblings in P1–P4 who use the bus
- Decisions are made after routes and capacities are determined by the city
- Feedback will be provided in October 2026
- Transport may be possible from November 2026
- If transport is granted: the 365-euro ticket must be returned
If places are available, efforts will still be made to find a solution.
Children with siblings already using transport are given priority.
P5 students may have to give up their seat during the school year to eligible P1–P4 students.
Interested parents of P5 students should contact the transport team via email: office@ev-esm.org
Families outside the city area:
Depending on the city’s decision, different options may apply:
-
-
- School bus
- Alternative transport (e.g. taxi or transport service)
- MVV / 365-euro ticket
-
Who decides on transport?
The City of Munich decides on the type and organization of transport.
The parent association provides organizational support but has no influence on these decisions.
When planning transport, an MVG stop within a radius of up to 1 km from the registered address is usually considered.
Cost regulations:
- Families within the city area:
Transport costs are covered in accordance with legal regulations → no cost for families - Families outside the city area:
- 20% contribution to transport costs
- Billing is based on costs determined by the City of Munich
- If the city provides a school bus, there will likely be no cost
Taxi cost guidance:

Important notes
-
-
- The ESM Parent Association (EV-ESM) has no influence on the selection of transport companies commissioned by the City of Munich. These are awarded through a Europe-wide tender.
- Routes and allocation of students to buses or taxis are determined by the City of Munich, not by the parent association.
- If a student is assigned to a taxi, child seat regulations must be followed. A booster seat should be brought to school and taken home again.
- Stops and departure times may be changed at any time by the City of Munich.
- In the 2026/2027 school year, travel times may increase due to factors beyond control, but should generally not exceed 1 hour.
- Pick-up and drop-off stops may not be located directly near home addresses.
- Drivers do not provide childcare. Parents must ensure children are at the stop on time to avoid being left unattended. This also applies to kindergarten children.
- In cases of major delays or cancellations, transport companies will inform EV-ESM and/or the school so that parents can be notified promptly (e.g. via email or phone).
- Return trips are scheduled after the end of the school day.
